Big Bang Theory and Star Trek

The episode [as usual] was very funny, but full of Star Trekky goodness.

Starting with the opening scene of the guys sitting around talking
about the new movie and that we see Spock's birth [not sure if that is
real as I have not read too many spoilers myself]....but then the
conversation turns to his conception, pon far, a possible fertility
clinic with Sarek going in with a copy of Pointy Ears and Shapely
Rears [I think that was the name of the mag he came up with]. Then
they wonder why aliens genitalia is all the same and why no alien
women ever tells Kirk get your thing out of my nose. And the Trek
references keep going until the end. With Shatner being declared the
People magazines Sexiest Man Alive and Tweety Bird saying I Tought I
taw a Romulan. Funny stuff.

At least Sweeny Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is my choice of films I must see this Christmas. And I don’t even like musicals!

I love Johnny Deep. There really is not too much on his resume that I do not like. Heck it would almost be easier for me to tell you which films he did that I disliked over trying to tell you which ones I loved the best. However, The combination of Johnny Depp and Tim Burton has always proven to be a good one. Just look at their other films they have done together.

Indiana Jones for a new generation

Lucasfilm's celebrated action/adventure hero, Indiana Jones, the forerunner of popular characters such as Lara Croft, will be making a triumphant return in 2008 with the yet-to-be-titled fourth installment of the Indiana Jones film series. Starring Harrison Ford and directed by Steven Spielberg, the film is slated for release in May 2008. Dark Horse Comics is excited to announce that it has acquired the comic book rights to the world's most famous adventurer and will launch a new series in 2008. Fans can plunge themselves into the adventures of the fedora-wearing archaeologist well before then. In February 2008, Dark Horse Comics will publish the first of two Indiana Jones Omnibuses collecting Dark Horse's previous entries in the saga. Then April sees the release of volume one of Indiana Jones Adventures--a digest-sized graphic novel designed for the enjoyment of young readers as well as adults. The Indiana Jones Adventures volumes and the Omnibuses will continue on a quarterly basis--including Omnibuses for the original Marvel run of Indiana Jones comics.

A comics adaptation of the film will be released simultaneously with the motion picture, followed immediately by an all-new Indiana Jones comics series.

Remastered Star Trek Episode The Doomsday Machine

The remastered version of the fan-favorite Star Trek episode, "The
Doomsday Machine" premieres in syndication nationwide during the
weekend of February 10, 2007. The remastered "The Doomsday Machine"
features over 100 all-new digital visual effects shots, the most of
any episode of the original Star Trek series.

William Windom guest stars as Commodore Matt Decker, commander of the
wrecked Starship Constellation. Decker tried desperately to save his
crew from the doomsday machine, only to be forced to watch in horror
as they were all killed by the alien robot.

The centerpiece of the new visual effects for "The Doomsday Machine"
is a digital rendering of the alien "planet killer," a miles-long
robot spaceship that destroys worlds, then eats the rubble for fuel.
CBS Digital created the new version of the massive weapon, based
closely on the original, but gave it a battered, more realistic
appearance. Another highlight of the episode is the Constellation, a
sister ship to the U.S.S. Enterprise. When discovered by Captain
James Kirk (William Shatner), the Constellation is a shattered hulk,
nearly destroyed by the doomsday machine. The hull of the
digitally-damaged Constellation has been torn open, revealing details
of a mangled and charred interior, underscoring the awesome power of
the planet killer.

"The Doomsday Machine" is regarded by many fans as a classic of
television science fiction, and was penned by noted s-f writer Norman
Spinrad. The episode was honored with a Hugo Award nomination in the
"Best Dramatic Presentation" category by the 1968 World Science
Fiction Convention. (Ironically, "The Doomsday Machine" lost to
another Star Trek classic, "The City on the Edge of Forever.")

The highly-anticipated remastered version of "The Doomsday Machine"
premieres nationwide during the weekend of February 10, 2007, starring
William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as Mr.
Spock, with DeForest Kelley as Dr. McCoy. The original episode was
first aired in October, 1967 and was written by Norman Spinrad and
directed by Marc Daniels. Star Trek was created by Gene Roddenberry.
Star Trek remastered is distributed in nationwide syndication by CBS
Paramount Television.

Hyperscan – Not Up To The Hype.

Last year Mattel announced a new gaming console that was going to be the next best thing to sliced bread. The Hyperscan. The Hyperscan combines the best of the hottest toy properties today, video gaming and collectible card games all into one neat little package. It is aimed at boys in the “tween” years [8-12]. Using RFID [radio-frequency identification] chips the game lets the players scan in new or upgraded powers for their characters. Sounds pretty cool doesn’t it?

The games, however, are very low def, so to speak. The X-men game that comes with the console is a lot like the first generation Mortal Kombat games. Low quality graphics and not a lot of moves make this a very cheap looking system. But I guess the old adage; “you get what you pay for” really does hold true in this case. The game system, which includes the X-Men CD-ROM, 6 collectible X-Men cards a controller and the game console, only costs about $70. [We picked ours up on clearance for $13].

So the concept is you collect and trade cool character, offense and defense cards to upgrade your characters and their moves. As you play the game you scan your card again to save the information. Sounds cool until you have to sit there and wait for the card to scan. Then sit there and wait for the game to load. Then sit there and wait to the card is scanned again to save your data. There is a lot of sitting and waiting in a world of fast moving video games. Not such a good thing.

So this system is really recommended for those 7-8 year olds who have not had any experience with other gaming consoles and have parents who don’t mind the slightly violent games [they are all pretty much fighting games]. Current games include X-men, IWL Wrestling and Ben 10. According to the website www.hyperscangamer.com [which was not working when we stopped by] there are new games in the work. Artwork suggests Marvel Heroes and Spider-Man.

Saul of the Mole Men

Okay, so those of us who grew up in the 70s all remember those live action Saturday morning TV shows like Land of the Lost, Space Academy, Sigmund and the Sea Monster, Bugaloos, Far Out Space Nuts and the like. Well, this new Adult Swim series follows suit and brings us psuedo sci-fi along with all the cheezy special effects, bad acting and even puppets just like when we were kids. Each episode is 15 minutes long [like most of the Ault Swim shows] which might be all we can handle out of this one. But Star Trek fans might find a similarity [at least to the background of the promo clips shown on the network's website].

Check it out. At least this live action series has a link to the animated world, albeit a small one, unlike previous network blunders like Saved By The Bell [what the hell were they thinking?].

Saul of the Mole Men: On a mission to the Earth’s core for the government’s STRATA agency, Saul Malone crashes his drill ship and stumbles upon the Mole Men.

Baffled by their customs and rituals, Saul runs afoul of the Mole Men by injuring their elder leader, killing their god and spreading disease. But Saul of the Mole Men is about more than just a stranded scientist. It involves political intrigue, time travel, and, of course, vampires.

Saul of the Mole Men is a 15-minute, serialized comedy-adventure combining live-action and puppetry and is shot entirely in front of a green screen. Saul of the Mole Men is executive produced by Peter Girardi, Craig Lewis and Tom Stern and is inspired by the work of Sid and Marty Krofft (Land Of The Lost), serialized sci-fi (Tom Baker-era Dr. Who) and the Planet of the Apes franchise.

"Journey to Babel" airs weekend of February 3, 2007

The Starship Enterprise hosts an explosive gathering of interstellar diplomats in "Journey to Babel," an episode of Star Trek Remastered, premiering nationwide during the weekend of February 3, 2007. "Journey to Babel" is regarded by many fans as a pivotal episode of the series, introducing Mark Lenard as Ambassador Sarek, Spock's father, and Jane Wyatt as Amanda, Spock's human mother. In the episode, an alien spy nearly kills Captain Kirk (William Shatner), putting Spock (Leonard Nimoy) in temporary command of the Starship Enterprise while the ship comes under deadly attack. The situation pits Spock's logical duty to his ship against his all-too-human desire to reconnect with his dying father.

Although most of the episode takes place on the Starship Enterprise, D.C. Fontana's script afforded the visual effects artists at CBS Digital the opportunity to show off the Enterprise's shuttlecraft hangar deck with an all-new shuttle landing sequence. They also reimagined the mysterious alien raider ship. In the original 1967 version of the episode, budget limitations forced the show's effects team to use a simple spinning wheel of light to represent the attacking spacecraft. For the 2007 remastered edition, digital artists remained faithful to the original effect, but embellished it by creating an ingenious ship design that used the spinning lights as a powerful alien propulsion system. Finally, this episode offered one of the original show's only glimpses of Spock's homeworld, Vulcan, as seen from space.

Mark Lenard's character of Sarek proved a favorite among Star Trek's fans, so much so that Lenard later reprised his role in three Star Trek movies and two episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The versatile Lenard had previously played the Romulan Commander in "Balance of Terror" during Star Trek's first season, and he also played a Klingon captain in the first Star Trek movie. Lenard is known to genre fans for his numerous roles in science fiction productions, including the regular role of Urko in the television version of Planet of the Apes. Jane Wyatt also reprised her role of Spock's mother in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Wyatt won three Emmy Awards for her performance as Margaret Anderson in the beloved sitcom, Father Knows Best.

The newly-remastered version of "Journey to Babel" will premiere nationwide during the weekend of February 3, 2007, starring William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock, with DeForest Kelley as Dr. McCoy. The original episode was first aired in November, 1967 and was written by series story editor D.C. Fontana and directed by Joseph Pevney. Star Trek was created by Gene Roddenberry. Star Trek Remastered is distributed in syndication by CBS Paramount Television.

Farscape creator is back

David Kemper is back in a big way.

The creator of Sci Fi Channel's Farscape--which ran four seasons on the network and was its highest-rated show at the time--has a deal with the network to create five new TV movies. Kemper also has a new series that is drawing interest from cable channels.

Kemper's first two films from the deal are the horror films Heat Stroke and Tyrannosaurus Azteca. They will air sometime next year, most likely in the network's Saturday Movie slot.
The new series in development by Kemper is being described as a postapocalyptic action series in the vein of Xena, The Warrior Princess. The series is based on a comic book.

Rigel Entertainment is coproducing the TV movies and producing the new series. Rigel president David Macaione says that three cable nets are interested in the new show, but he would not specify which three.

Sci Fi Channel has had even greater ratings success since Farscape, with Battlestar Galactica and Eureka each pulling in good numbers.

'Spaceballs' to become TV cartoon

Mel Brooks is developing an animated TV series based on his comedy feature "Spaceballs."
Like the 1987 movie, which parodied well-known science-fiction movies, "Spaceballs: The Animated Series" will spoof current blockbusters as well as every genre of entertainment from movies and reality TV to culture and politics.

It is set to debut on cable network G4 in fall 2007. Production has already started on an initial batch of 13 episodes.

Brooks, who will voice two characters in the show, co-wrote the pilot with longtime collaborator Thomas Meehan, who will oversee all writing for the series.

Shatner, Nimoy and 40 years of 'Star Trek'

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy first appeared as "Star Trek's" Capt. James T. Kirk and his first officer, Mr. Spock, on September 8, 1966 -- 40 years ago Friday.

Nobody has let them forget it since.

Indeed, Shatner and Nimoy seem downright, uh, reluctant to answer questions about that anniversary. Perhaps they're tired of hearing fans ask them about time travel in "City on the Edge of Forever." Or Vulcan mating rituals in "Amok Time." Or what it was like to wear pointy ears for three years on TV -- and many more on film.

After innumerable anniversaries, interviews, conventions, books, press junkets, red carpet arrival lines, DVD featurettes and commentaries, it's abundantly clear: They are so over "Star Trek."

If you ask them what still gets them fired up about the late producer Gene Roddenberry's creation after all these years, you get an answer that -- underneath the glibness -- is very telling:

SHATNER: Money.
NIMOY: Yeah. The big, the big bucks.
SHATNER: Money. The money gets you fired up.
TOGETHER: The biiiig bucks.
Seriously?
SHATNER: Yes, that was serious. We were very serious about that.
NIMOY: Yeah. But seriously, folks.

They aren't the only ones whose affections are waning.
The 40th anniversary finds the venerable sci-fi franchise at a crossroads. "Enterprise" was canceled after only four seasons and the last "Trek" film, "Nemesis," was a critical and box office disappointment.

There also have been suggestions that Paramount, "Trek's" studio, is milking the franchise dry. Even "Trek" producer Rick Berman acknowledged "franchise fatigue" before the demise of "Enterprise."

Some "Trek" critics have even said the unsayable: It's time for "Star Trek" to declare victory and leave the field of battle, while it still has some dignity left and before the brand name is further tarnished. Shatner and Nimoy, in their Mutt-and-Jeff way, don't buy it.

SHATNER: So you want Paramount to say we've made enough money?
NIMOY: Let's stop making money. Yeah.
SHATNER: Yeah, yeah.
NIMOY: The stockholders won't mind.
SHATNER: No, and we've --
NIMOY: We should stop making money.
SHATNER: Folks, we've made enough money, we're walking away --
NIMOY: We're going to take a break --
SHATNER: Yes. It's been a wonderful ride --
NIMOY: We're going on vacation --
SHATNER: And no more money.
NIMOY: Right. Off to an island someplace and just ...
SHATNER: We'll just handle the books in a different way and make it look like we made something.
NIMOY: Watch the sunset and forget about money...
SHATNER: Yes.
NIMOY: And your investment? Oh, don't worry about it, you know.
SHATNER: It's going to be OK.
NIMOY: We'll get around to that someday.
SHATNER: You'll have some other shows.
NIMOY: Yeah, we don't want to make any more money. No.

Not that Paramount is listening to the critics. Plans are under way for another "Trek" film in 2008, with J.J. Abrams, fresh off his success with "Alias," "Lost" and "Mission: Impossible 3" slated to take over the reins. Word is the film will be about a young Kirk and Spock. Abrams gets the endorsement of the guys:

NIMOY: He's a talented person. He's talented.
SHATNER: He's going to call Leonard. He talked about calling Leonard for advice.
NIMOY: He's talented. We'll help him in any way we can.
SHATNER: As long as they meet Leonard's price.

Then there are the original episodes, the 79 shows fans got to know by heart through their endless airings in syndication. As part of the 40th anniversary celebration, TVLand will begin showing them in their original broadcast order in November. The show is also returning to broadcast syndication for the first time in 16 years. The episodes will begin airing on the more than 200 stations that own the rights starting September 16.

Perhaps the best news for fans -- though some purists may be upset -- is that the original episodes have been remastered in high definition and will include new special effects shots.

Not bad for a show that appeared to be dead on June 3, 1969, leaving Nimoy to join "Mission: Impossible," Shatner to take guest roles and "Saturday Night Live" to produce a great sketch about the show's demise.

So why are we still talking about it?

Shatner has an answer that's he's probably been giving for 40 years. No matter how rote it sounds it's still undeniably true:

SHATNER: It's the characters, it's the uniqueness. [It's] Mr. Spock. It is the relationship between Spock and Kirk. It is the relationship that the three of us had, the compadres, the family. The levels of meaning of the show. The uniqueness of the science fiction at that time. It was all that and many other things, but the curious thing is, nobody really knows. So anything you say is as valid as anything we could say. 'Cause if we knew what it was --

NIMOY: We'd do it again.

SHATNER: And again. And to keep trying. And I haven't got it yet.

Each member will earn "producer points" as they take part in the making of the film.  Those who participate the most will be brought to the set and will earn equity in the film among other benefits.

The search for a director will begin with online submissions, with candidates being asked to tell a story using three pictures and no narrative, and to submit a questionnaire.  LiveMansion.com members will rank submissions, with the top choices moving on to the second round.  The next step will require candidates to submit up to a three minute video, which will also be ranked.  For round three, those still standing will be provided three scenes from the film, one of which they must shoot and submit the video.  Community members will then cast a simple vote whether to give them the job or not.  The top vote getters will move on to the final round.

The five top candidates for director will be given a budget  to create a five-minute short film based on  scenes from LIVE MANSION: THE MOVIE.   The final candidates will then be brought to New York where they will present their work to industry professionals. Live Mansion Members will then vote online to select the director based on the strength of their short.

The open casting process will also be broken into rounds, starting with photo and questionnaire submissions that will be ranked by members.  Top ranking entries will move to a sorting round in which LiveMansion.com will unveil eight character descriptions and candidates will choose which roles they feel fit them best.  Members will rate the candidates for each role, with the highest rated actor candidates going to the next round.   Round 3 will require candidates to submit a short video of themselves performing scenes from the movie. The top vote getters for each role will be brought to  New York and will participate in a live online casting showcase, before members make their final choices.

Filmmaker Ray Harryhausen has joined forces with BlueWater Productions on a series of new comic book ventures and merchandising under the "Ray Harryhausen Presents" banner. Harryhausen is now part of the BlueWater team developing projects that tap his extensive creative talents.

BlueWater will produce six titles with Harryhausen, advancing the adventures of the characters the filmmaker brought to life in his classic sci-fi and fantasy franchises. Slated for release later this year are "Wrath of the Titans," "Sinbad's Voyage to Mars" and "20 Million Miles From Earth."Plans for feature films and a television series are being developed by Left Field Film Corp.

Harryhausen will be at the San Diego Comic-Con July 21 and 22 with the BlueWater team, where he'll sign posters from the upcoming series. The Dresden Files Pilot for SCIFI

NEW YORK (Nov. 9, 2005) — SCI FI Channel has cast Paul Blackthorne (24, Presidio Med) to star as Chicago-based wizard and detective Harry Dresden in The Dresden Files. Director David Carson (Star Trek Generations) has been tapped to helm the project. Production on the two-hour backdoor pilot film is set to commence in Toronto later this month, with plans for a Summer 2006 premiere.

The Dresden Files is being produced by Lions Gate Television, in association with Nicolas Cage's Saturn Films (The Life of David Gale, Shadow of the Vampire). Hans Beimler (The District , Profiler) and Robert Hewitt Wolfe (The 4400, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) will serve as executive producers alongside Cage; his Saturn Films partner, Norm Golightly; and Morgan Gendel (Law & Order , V.I.P.).

According to Cage, "Norm and I feel that Paul's passion for the part and talent will translate into a charismatic performance."

Best known for his acclaimed performance as the villainous Stephen Saunders on 24, Paul Blackthorne also starred in Presidio Med and in the feature film Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India. He has guest-starred on Medium and ER and has a recurring role on Deadwood . Blackthorne is represented by Seven Summits Pictures and Management and SDB Partners.

David Carson has directed numerous sci-fi hits, including the infamous Star Trek Generations feature film, in which Captain Kirk dies. His other credits include the pilots for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Strange Luck, Sons & Daughters, Celebrity and Odyssey 5 — all of which were successfully sold to series.

Based on the best-selling series of novels by Jim Butcher, The Dresden Files pilot, written by Beimler and Wolfe, tells the story of Harry Dresden, a Chicago-based private detective with extraordinary abilities. From legendary Japanese filmmaker Ishiro Honda, Gojira quickly became a monster classic. Gojira will only be available as part of a special DVD 2-pack that also includes the re-edited US version, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, starring Raymond Burr. Both versions have been digitally remastered in HD widescreen. The Gojira/Godzilla: King of the Monsters DVD 2-pack stomps onto retail shelves late summer for $21.98 SRP.

Robert Mayo, SVP of Home Video at Classic Media, said, "It's really exciting to be able to finally bring this classic film to DVD for the American audience. Fans have been looking forward to the release of Gojira for several years."

A Monster Metaphor

Ishiro Honda's 1954 black-and-white classic spawned a new genre called the "kaiju eiga" or, Japanese monster movie, giving way to countless sequels. With its 50th anniversary theatrical re-release in 2004, audiences rediscovered the strong anti-nuclear message of the original Gojira film.

Gojira contains 40 minutes of footage that was not seen as part of the re-edited, re-dubbed Americanized Godzilla: King of Monsters. In the US version 40 minutes were cut and 20 minutes of new scenes were added, starring Raymond Burr as an American reporter. As a result, the original tone of the movie was changed and the anti-H-Bomb message
dropped.

Gojira (1954)

Run Time: 98 minutes

When several ships mysteriously explode and sink off the coast of Japan, the country begins to panic. Authorities are convinced that the unexplained activity was caused by underwater mines or volcanoes and sends officials to Odo Island to investigate. Days later, something comes ashore and destroys several neighboring houses, killing many locals. Renowned paleontologist, Dr. Kyohei Yemane (Takashi Shimura), is called to lead a new expedition and uncovers the source of the problem - a 400-foot tall mutant dinosaur the natives call Gojira. The Doctor insists that the monster, which was awakened from a million-year sleep by nuclear bomb tests in the South Pacific, be studied not destroyed. Gojira soon begins a rampage that threatens to destroy Japan. Can the powerful monster be eliminated before it is too late?

Godzilla: King of the Monsters (1956)

When American reporter Steve Martin, played by Raymond Burr, investigates a series of mysterious disasters off the coast of Japan, he comes face to face with an ancient creature so powerful and terrifying, it can reduce Tokyo to a smoldering graveyard. Nuclear weapon testing resurrected this relic from the Jurassic age, and now this behemoth is stomping and smashing his way through the city. Conventional weapons are useless against him; but scientist Dr. Serizawa has discovered a weapon that could destroy all life in the bay - including Godzilla! Narnia Prince Caspian Preproduction Begins

Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media, in collaboration with Academy Award(R)-nominated director Andrew Adamson, have begun pre-production on "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian," the next big screen installment of the "Narnia" Chronicles, and the follow-up to the international blockbuster, "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe," it was announced today (2/2). The latter film, based on the works of C. S. Lewis, has attracted legions of moviegoers all over the world and has grossed in excess of $637.8 million to date at the worldwide box office. It also received three Academy Award(R) nominations earlier this week. Internationally, "Narnia" already ranks as Buena Vista's top grossing live-action release of all-time (surpassing both "Armageddon" and "Pirates of the Caribbean") with its gross to date of $359.4 million." Domestically, the film's gross currently stands at $278 million and has already established itself as the Studio's third highest-grossing live-action film of all-time. The film is on track to become Buena Vista's all-time live-action champ, surpassing "Pirates of the Caribbean's" worldwide gross of $655 million.

"The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian," will reunite most of the principal cast and creative team responsible for "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe." Andrew Adamson ("Shrek," "Shrek 2") will reprise his role as director, in addition to serving as a producer, and co-writer (in collaboration with Christopher Markus and Steve McFeeley). Production is set to begin later this year for a Christmas 2007 release. "Prince Caspian" finds the Pevensie siblings pulled back into the land of Narnia, where a thousand years have passed since they left. The children are once again enlisted to join the colorful creatures of Narnia in combating an evil villain who prevents the rightful Prince from ruling the land. "Prince Caspian" was first published in 1951, and is the second book in the seven-book series written by Lewis. It was intended as a continuation of "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe." Lewis' "The Chronicles of Narnia" have sold over 100 million copies worldwide, and continues to be one of the best loved and most popular series of all time.

Ultimate Avengers

The DVD for the first Marvel animated film [straight to DVD] comes out next week [Feb 26th] and it is called The Ultimate Avengers. Obviously it is a story about the Avengers. Who are the Avengers? They are a group of super heroes lead by Captain American. The members are mostly loans who now must work together to save the world. Besides Captain American the Avengers are comprised of The Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Wasp and Giant Man.

Since this is a first for the Avenger films we get loaded down with lots of back story, especially Captain America [but then again he is the main guy in the series]. I had a chance to see this film last week [lucky me got it before street date]. And it really is not a bad film, liked the animation, it reminded me of the good old days of cartoons on TV --- Spider-man and the X-men shows. Looking forward to having the chance to see more Marvel animated films in the future. So everyone head out and pick this up next week when it comes out and show your support....the further away from character introductions we get the better the stories will be.

When you do get it check out the special features, the interviews with the different writers and artists is well worth watching and it will fill you in on the history of the Avengers, if, like me, you know very little about them.

"Trek" Super Bowl XL Commercial

Anyone see the Aleve commercial during the first half of the super bowl?

Nimoy is walking through a backstage area complaining on the phone to his agent that he cannot go on because it hurts too much, he just cannot do it. The whole time he is talking he is gestering with his right hand and people are waving back at him. He then enters his dressing room [and I guess takes Aleve....I did not see that point]. Then walks out on stage and the crowd is in anticipation the camera zooms in on couple dressed in starfleet get up Vulcan ears and all and back to Nimoy....who after taking aleve can now turn his waving hand into the classic Vulcan salute. Crowd [and myself] go crazy.

This gets my vote for the best super bowl commercial in this game! The Burger King ad was good too...if only they would leave that hideous king out of it. Next was the B.C. Fedex commercial. The Macgyver master card one was pretty good too as was the Budweiser streaker :)

I don't work with too many people, but someone should have gotten it.

Chiller Theatre

We attempted to go to Chiller Theatre Horror convention this past weekend. Drove all the way up to the Meadowlands in northern Jersey and it was sold out. [We had to argue with them to even let us in to go potty before turning around for the 3+ hour drive home!]

But in a way after walking around the building and seeing the line to get into the tent to see the guest [it was at least 2 football fields long ----wrapped completely around the building] I was a little relieved. I would not have liked hanging out in the cold all day just to get in to get the few autographs I wanted.

I will just bu them off the actors websites. And maybe try Chiller again when it is not their 15th Anniversary big show!

Anyone remember this show? It was a little like Dawson's creek meets Damien [I said this the first night it aired and soon after they were using a similar tag line from some other reviewer ---- OC meets the Omen ---- they stole it from me I tellz ya!].

It is about this blonde evil chick [aren't all blondes evil?] who supposedly has these powers and the mark of the devil on her.

The series did not last the whole season....and I think it was up against something else I watched. So I never saw all the episodes.

Well it is coming out on DVD [info will be posted on www.scifislacker.com soon] and I just got my copy. Looks like the complete series is on 3 disks and it even includes 5 unaired episodes.

REVIEW: Atomic Swindlers CD

Melodic songs from across the galaxy come poring out of April Laragy
and the members of the band Atomic Swindlers.

There's no swindle here just good music. We travel back in time to a
period when bands and their music told a story like the Beatles and
Ziggy Stardust. And you'll hear a bit of their sound in the Atomic
Swindlers as well. Albeit some of the stories told here might be
beyond the grasp of the average human intellect.

As soon as the disk starts spinning you can hear the influences of the
bands mentioned earlier mixed with the sounds of today. Some of the
tunes bring to mind No Doubt or Garbage while others flash back to the
Pandoras [thanks in part to the lead vocals on all accounts]. Laragy's
cow punk past even shines through on one or two of the tracks.

Each tune lends itself to a different style of music while never
straying too far. The deceptively cheery music tends to hide the
darker forces working within the lyrics [which you can read on the
bands official website]. The science fiction theme is never lost in
any of the songs, taking the listener to the outer reaches of space
and time while more often than not returning us to look even deeper
into the human psyche to see what we might have learned on our
journey.

Their first music video is a spiffy little animated Samurai-Jack-like
adventure where we find the heroine searching the galaxy for her
ladylove. The video premiered at the ImageOut film festival for its
lesbian theme. And another song, Intergalactic Lesbian Love Song,
suggests a future time and place when homosexually just is without the
controversy --- as hopefully one day it will be here when all peoples
are excepted no matter their race, religion or orientation.

You can watch the video on their website. It is also available on the
enhanced CD. Once you see it you'll want more.

Take Atomic Swindlers CD, Coming Out Electric out for a spin or two
you'll find yourself listening to it all the time. Be sur eto check
out the band and the cd on their official website.

BLOB FEST

This weekend is the annual BLOB Fest in Phoenixville, PA. Location is
at the acutal theater used in the original film THE BLOB. Which was
film right here in PA in Yellow Springs, Chester County [who hold
their own Blob Fest and you can see some the Studios builds, equipment
and stills from their films....you can see pics from last years event

Friday, July 15 at 9:30 will be the re-enactment of the running of the
Blob....the theater gets filled to the gills and everyone runs out as
if the Blob is after them! [I am heading to this just for the Photo
ops]. This event is FREE.

Saturday, July 16 there will be a street fair at noon, costume contest
[being judged by Kira Schon of Night of the Living Dead], big screen
showings of THE BLOB, Ghost In The Invisible Bikini and 9pm a Double
Feature of Robot Monster in AMAZING 2D and THE BLOB. Wes Shank and the
BLOB itself will be there to.

REVIEW: Destroy All Humans

Destroy all Humans [review of PS2 game]

If you like B-Movies from the 50s/60s looks like Destroy All Humans
might just be the game for you. The game sets you down smack in the
middle of what feels just like a 50s sci-fi film. The story is a
simple one you are a part of a superior alien race who needs to
retrieve DNA placed in the brains of humans to survive. So your
mission is simple - Destroy All Humans!

Both the story and game play options are described to you during your
game play. So you don't really need to read the instructions and can
just dive right in. [However you may wish to familiarize yourself with
the controls a wee bit before starting --- we found ourselves hitting
all the wrong buttons at all the wrong times.]

Fun game for almost all ages [violence you know --- kinda figured that
one out with a name like Destroy All Humans].

Biggest downfall of the game is that when you die you start your
mission from the beginning. And that can be very frustrating when
nearly complete and you get your final zap. Game play is not saved
until you complete the mission and head back to the Mothership for
further instructions.

REVIEW: Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of the War of the Worlds

Get immersed into the world of HG Wells' novel War of the Worlds with
Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of the War of the Worlds. Originally
released in 1978, Jeff's music has had many fans and has grown to
become a classic. Now a whole new generation will be exposed to this
galactic experience. And they will be pleasantly surprised at how
quickly the music will pull them into the story a create a whole new
world from HG Wells words.

At times the music seems a little dated [at one point it is very
reminiscent of Logan's Run or the disco scenes from Buck Roger's in
the 25th Century], but that feeling quickly disappears as one becomes
so engulfed in the music and what it is telling us above and beyond
the words of the narration.

Fans of the both the book and films will find this to be a remarkable
addition to the entire War of the Worlds experience.

Losers in Long Lines at Star Wars Episode III

[being the slacker I am I know this is a month late but....]

I know the title is a bit dregrading but hey I was the second loser in line!

We arrived around 4 PM to stand in line for the mid-night showing of
the latest episode of the latest Star Wars trilogy. There was one
other person in front of us. She too was holding spaces for a group of
friends --- my group would eventually total ten [I had the task of
buying the tix and holding our spot in line].

Heck we had done this as a group since our days of working together at
800-Trekker [a once great sci-fi mail order company] so why should we
stop now.

As the night continued the rest of my group started appearing. We took
turns leaving for potty breaks and to get food [theater was none to
happy with us for outside food but we weren't technically in the
theater yet]. We played games. Mostly sat / stood around and talked
about all things but mostly sci-fi. One of the guys in front of us was
a trekkie too so we talk star trek in a star wars line [I thought for
sure something was going to open up and swallow us whole].

Then the local news came around and interviewed some of us. I was one
of those interviewed [as they say hind sight is 20/20], I did not plug
the site nor mention my online sci-fi group www.pagodascifi.com, most
of who were in line with me --- DOH! Also did not bother calling
anyone as I hoped my portion would be edited out. It was not, as I
later found out.

Folks came in costume. Some pretty lame others were most excellent.

The TV camera guy caught a full costume Vader dancing on the arcade
game, Dance Dance Revolution...priceless.

Loads of folks had the Master Replicas Light up Lightsabres. [Way cool
at around $100 bucks]

As the night progressed so did the line. I took a walk down through
and got to stop and talk with other friends/fans as I did.

The whole night was a great experience and it was topped off by a
pretty good film. Yes, the acting was a bit shallow and the dialog
wasn't great, but it was packed with action, lead right into Episode
IV [A New Hope] and both R2 and Yoda had the best parts [but isn't it
supposed to be that way]. Even though you missed the fun of the
midnight show go see this film on the big screen.

S C I E N C E: Space probe begins descent to Saturn moon Titan

A European-designed space probe broke away from its NASA mothership on a plunge toward the mysterious Saturn moon Titan, starting a journey researchers hope will end with answers about one of the most puzzling bodies in the solar system.

Ground controllers received a signal indicating that Huygens had separated from NASA’s Saturn probe Cassini, as small explosives sheared away locking bolts and a set of springs gently pushed the probe off on a collision course with Titan. “The only thing we have to do now is assess how it left,” said Earl Maize, deputy programme manager for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory here, referring to the probe’s trajectory and how it spins as it heads to Titan.

Huygens will “sleep” for the next three weeks, coasting in a suspended state toward Titan and waking just four hours before its arrival on January 14.

The European Space Agency-managed Huygens aims to shed light on the only moon in the solar system with an atmosphere, a place where the surface may not be solid and the truth, scientists say, is almost certainly stranger than fiction. “There are several books on the subject and I’m sure that they’re all wrong,” said Jean-Pierre Lebreton, the Huygens project manager with the ESA.

Long a favourite home for science-fiction tales, Titan is larger than the planets Mercury and Pluto. Its atmosphere is mostly nitrogen, like Earth, but its surface temperatures of about minus-180 degrees Celsius make it inhospitable. “In some sense it’s a trip to early Earth,” said David Southwood, director of the scientific program for the ESA.

One of the biggest questions, Southwood and colleagues said, is whether there is any liquid on Titan’s surface – like lakes filled with methane rain. Huygens will hopefully answer that question, having already traveled 2.2 billion miles to Saturn over seven years on the hip of the NASA craft Cassini.

About 2.5 yards wide and shaped something like a flying saucer, it was due to make a leisurely descent of about two-and-a-half hours through Titan’s atmosphere, using three parachutes to reduce its speed and give the on-board instruments time to take detailed readings.

Once it reaches the surface of Titan, presuming there is a solid surface for it to impact, Huygens is expected to remain operational for only a brief time, possibly as little as 30 minutes, before its batteries die. “It’s fair to say we have very little idea what the surface is,” Southwood said. “We don’t know if we’re going to splash down or crash down.”

Scourge of Worlds DVD Review

Scourge of Worlds is a Dungeons & Dragons Adventure DVD where you get to pick the outcome of the animated film. It appears to be a joint venture of Rhino, Hasbro and Wizard of the Coast.

Supposedly there are 990 stories on the one disk, but ultimately only 4 different outcomes. It takes about an hour and a half to get through this adventure since you are constantly being asked where you want to go or what you want to do.

The animation is similar to early computer games, in otherwords not the lastest and greatest cgi.

True D&D fans should enjoy it, especially the fact that everytime you watch it you will experience a different fantasy and be confronted by angels, wraiths, druids, orcs and demonic beholders.

Your goal is to save the world. The stories revolve around three heroes -- Regdar a human warrior, Lidda a rogue halfling, and Mialee an elf wizard who set out on their quest to recover a stolen map and its thief. This map leads toan ultimate weapon created by an ancient race of mages who made it to destroy their enemies and end all wars. This weapon, the Aryx Orthian or Scourge of Worlds must not fall into the wrong hands and there are those out to stop them at all costs.

My first attempt at watching [or is that playing] this DVD everyone ended up dead and the Scourge of Worlds was recovered by an evil enemy. Upon rewatching it I did indeed have a completely different experience as I made different choices for the characters.

Review of A Tale of Two Sisters

The style of this film is on the same scale as The Ring, The Grudge and The Eye and it appears that Asian filmmakers are giving us something American filmmakers can't [or at least need to remake for wide release in the US] and that is a creepy factor that is off the scale.

While this film may not keep you up at night [as The Ring did that first we viewed it] there is something here that sticks with you long after you have returned to your normal life.

The first few minutes minutes of the movie seem to be leading you somewhere yet it is hard to keep your focus with the slow pace and artful transitions between scenes. The painfully slow beginning is worth the sitting through to get to the rest of this film. Especially, if you have not read the synopsis [above]. There is a point in the film where you feel the shock of the plot twist nearly as much as the character it is happening to.

The effects are hauntingly similar to other Asian horror films to hit these shores but they are sure to please the avid horror fans among us. While many horror films have relied on chilling music to help produce those feeling of dread and fright [Halloween would not be Halloween without the music would it?], this film relies heavily on other auditory devices to thrill and fill your imagination and get your adrenaline pumping. Heck you could just listen to this film and get scared.

However, the film never truly fills in all the gaps that some of the imagery produces and leaves us wondering if we have gone equally as mad as the main character Su-Mi.

I give this 3.5 out of 5 stars. [In other words it is worth seeing.]
